Quebec radon requirements for new construction

What your permit set must show
- Quebec is mid-transition between two code editions: the 2015(Qc) baseline (in force since January 8, 2022, when the RBQ extended the through-slab pipe requirement province-wide) and the 2020(Qc) enhanced edition, in force since April 17, 2025 and becoming the sole applicable code on October 17, 2026.
- Under the 2020(Qc) edition, a dwelling with 10% or more of its wall/roof/floor area in ground contact must have a full passive vertical radon evacuation column (article 9.13.4.4), not just the rough-in stub pipe required in most other jurisdictions we track.
- The passive stack must be routed and terminated through the roof at construction, per clearance requirements set out in the code's Table 9.13.4.4-A -- a Quebec permit set that stops at a stubbed pipe, the pattern used in BC, Alberta, and Ontario, does not meet Quebec's current requirement.
- No mechanical fan is installed in the column at rough-in stage; that remains a post-occupancy addition if testing warrants it, consistent with the rest of Canada.
Common questions
Is Quebec's requirement the same as BC, Alberta, and Ontario's rough-in stub?
No. Quebec's 2020(Qc) building code edition, in force since April 17, 2025, requires a complete passive vent stack routed through the roof at construction, not just a stubbed pipe. This is a materially higher bar than the rough-in-only requirement used elsewhere in Canada.
Which code edition applies to my Quebec project right now?
