What your permit set must show
- New Jersey did not adopt an IRC radon appendix; it wrote its own Radon Hazard Subcode (N.J.A.C. 5:23-10) under the state Uniform Construction Code, which sets the vapor barrier, aggregate, and vent-pipe construction requirements directly rather than pointing at an IRC appendix.
- Mandatory only in designated Tier 1 municipalities within Burlington, Camden, Cumberland, Gloucester, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Passaic, Salem, Somerset, Sussex, and Warren counties, not statewide.
- A project outside a Tier 1 municipality is not subject to the subcode's construction requirements, so jurisdiction confirmation at the municipal level is required before assuming coverage.

Is radon-resistant construction mandatory everywhere in New Jersey?
No. New Jersey's Radon Hazard Subcode (N.J.A.C. 5:23-10) is mandatory only in Tier 1 municipalities designated across 14 counties. A project outside a Tier 1 municipality is not automatically covered.
