Michigan radon requirements for new construction
Michigan Residential Code, 2015 IRC Appendix F
What your permit set must show
- The Michigan Residential Code requires 2015 IRC Appendix F only within nine named Zone 1 counties: Branch, Calhoun, Cass, Hillsdale, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Lenawee, St. Joseph, and Washtenaw.
- Outside those nine counties, the appendix is not mandatory under the statewide code.
- Appendix F carries the same substantive rough-in requirements as the current Appendix BE numbering.
Common questions
Is this requirement statewide in Michigan?
No. It applies only within nine named EPA Zone 1 counties: Branch, Calhoun, Cass, Hillsdale, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Lenawee, St. Joseph, and Washtenaw.
My project is in a Michigan county not on that list — do I still need a rough-in?
Not under the statewide mandate. Confirm whether your specific municipality has separately adopted a radon appendix before assuming no requirement applies.
