Massachusetts radon requirements for new construction

Massachusetts amendments to 2015 IRC Appendix F

What your permit set must show

  • Massachusetts requires 2015 IRC Appendix F only within its three EPA Zone 1 counties: Worcester, Essex, and Middlesex.
  • Outside those three counties, the requirement is not mandatory under the statewide code; confirm local adoption before assuming coverage.
  • Appendix F carries the same substantive requirements as the current Appendix BE numbering: sub-slab depressurization piping, sealed soil-gas barrier, and sealed floor penetrations.

Common questions

Is a radon rough-in required statewide in Massachusetts?

No. The mandate applies within the three EPA Zone 1 counties — Worcester, Essex, and Middlesex — not the whole state.

What does the plans examiner check for in these counties?

Reviewers look for the 2015 IRC Appendix F rough-in components: sub-slab depressurization piping shown on the foundation plan, a sealed soil-gas barrier, and sealed penetrations through the slab.
