What your permit set must show
- Maine did not adopt an IRC radon appendix. MUBEC incorporates the Maine model radon standard, based on ASTM E1465, for new residential construction statewide.
- MUBEC replaced the prior Title 25 §2466 local-opt-in framework, so coverage is no longer contingent on a municipality separately opting in.
- MUBEC came into force December 1, 2010, with mandatory municipal enforcement phased in through 2012.
Common questions
Does Maine use the IRC radon appendix?
No. Maine's requirement runs through the Maine Uniform Building and Energy Code's own model radon standard, based on ASTM E1465, rather than an IRC appendix. A permit set for Maine should cite MUBEC and the Maine radon standard, not an IRC appendix number.
Is this requirement statewide?
Yes. MUBEC replaced Maine's earlier local-opt-in system, so the standard applies statewide rather than only in municipalities that separately adopted it.
