District of Columbia radon requirements for new construction
2017 DC Construction Codes, IRC Appendix F
What your permit set must show
- DC adopted IRC Appendix F (the radon control methods appendix as numbered in the 2015/2018 IRC cycle) into its 2017 Construction Codes, applying it citywide.
- The appendix requires the same substantive rough-in components carried forward across later renumberings (Appendix AF, then Appendix BE): sub-slab or sub-membrane depressurization piping, a sealed soil-gas barrier, and sealed floor penetrations. See our breakdown of the current-edition text at IRC Appendix BE.
- Applies to new one- and two-family residential construction citywide, with no sub-jurisdiction carve-out.
Common questions
Does every new DC home need a radon rough-in?
Yes. The 2017 DC Construction Codes incorporate IRC Appendix F citywide for new one- and two-family dwellings.
Why does DC cite "Appendix F" instead of the newer appendix letters?
DC's construction codes were last updated to the 2017 cycle, which used the Appendix F numbering. Later IRC editions renumbered the same substantive requirement to Appendix AF and then Appendix BE. A DC-adopted permit set should still cite Appendix F unless DC updates its code cycle.
